History of Ammaji Temple

The story of how this temple came to be is quite intriguing. It all began with the desire of Sri Krishna to build a temple for Sri Rama, a significant figure in Hinduism.

In Chennai, there lived a man named Swami Parthasarathy Iyengar, known as Yogi Parthasarathy. He was a publisher who produced many important religious texts in the late 19th century. Yogi Parthasarathy deeply longed to visit and pay his respects at all the sacred Divya Desams, which are important shrines for followers of the Sri Vaishnava tradition.

While travelling across North India, he visited various sacred places and finally reached Ayodhya, the birthplace of Lord Sri Rama. He devotedly worshipped the Lord there, but he still felt a strong desire to build a temple that embodied the culture of South India and featured South Indian-style sculptures.

His thoughts and aspirations seemed to reach the divine, and the Lord conveyed His wish through a dream to Yogi Parthasarathy's wife, Yogi Singammal. In her dream, she saw the Uthsava Vigrahas (idols used for processions) of Sri Rama and Seetha hidden in a rundown temple in a village called Thiruppullani, also known as Dharbasayanam, in Tamil Nadu's Ramanathapuram District.

When they went to investigate, they discovered the deteriorating temple and sacred idols, just as they had appeared in the dream.

With the help of their friends and family, they sought permission from the King of Ramanathapuram to relocate these Vigrahas. After gaining his approval, they decided to move to Ayodhya and construct a temple dedicated to Sri Rama to enshrine these sacred idols.

Around 1898-99, this couple visited this place. In just five years, they finished building the temple, brought idols from Tiruppullani, and, in 1904, consecrated the new temple.

The man, Yogi Parthasarathy, lived here for about five years before he left for a heavenly abode to serve God permanently. But his wife, Yogi Singammal, stayed in Ayodhya for around 30 years.

They came from Tiruvallikeni, Chennai, to Ayodhya to serve Lord Sri Rama. She took care of the temple's affairs and taught important aspects of Sri Vaishnava philosophy, a tradition within Vaishnavism.

Even though her real name was Singammal, people fondly called her Ammaji. After Yogi Sri Parthasarathy passed away a few years after moving to Ayodhya, his wife was responsible for completing the temple and organizing daily worship and festivals. Because she played a crucial role in building the temple, it became known as AMMAJI MANDIR in her honour.

Architecture of Ammaji Temple

Ammaji Mandir is dedicated to Lord Sri Rama and follows the same traditions as the famous Divyadesams in Tamil Nadu.

The temples’ structure, the deities worshipped, and the way rituals are performed all adhere to the Bhagavad Ramanuja Sampradaya Srivaishnava tradition, a South Indian style of worship. The Saraswathi Bhandaram Trust oversees the management of this temple.

This temple has a history of about a century and is situated near the banks of the Sarayu River in Ayodhya. It was established through the dedicated efforts of two noble individuals, Yogi Parthasarathy Iyengar and Smt. Singammal.

Yogi Parthasarathy Iyengar, the temple's founder, was renowned for his profound knowledge of Hindu religious scriptures, theology, and traditions. He was fluent in Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada languages.

The main idols in this temple, both the big and the smaller ones used for processions, are incredibly beautiful and fascinating.

When you enter through the grand entrance, you will see a special flagpole called the Dwajasthambam. As we go further inside the temple, there is a large hall called the Maha Mantapam and a smaller hall known as the Arda Mantapam.

In the heart of the temple, the main deity is Lord Sri Rama, standing with His bow called Kodandam. Standing beside Him are his loyal brother, Lakshmana, and his devoted wife, Sita Mata.

Nearby, you can also see a representation of Lord Krishna dancing joyfully. Additionally, there is Vishvaksena, the commander of Lord Vishnu's divine army, and the divine presence of Sri Balaji of Tirumala.

In a separate area, you will also find Sri Ranganatha, the deity worshipped by Lord Sri Rama. Within this space is another set of idols representing Sri Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana.

There is also a special section for Azhvars and Acharyas, including revered figures like Nammalwar, Tirumangai Alwar, Swami Ramanuja, and Swami Alavandar.

Entry fees and timings of Ammaji Temple

Entry to this religious place is free for all its visitors. The timings of the temple are 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM. It is open on all days of the week.

Best time to visit the Ammaji Temple

The best time to visit Ayodhya and Ammaji mandir is between October to March when the weather is not too cold or hot, and you can easily travel to all the places. Try visiting Ayodhya during festivals to enjoy the ambience as the city is decorated and lighted.

How to reach the Ammaji Temple

The Ammaji Mandir is at Tulsi Nagar, Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh 224123. But before you reach the temple, you must go to the city of Ayodhya. This journey can be conveniently done by using any mode of commute- air, rail or road.

By air- Ayodhya does not have any airport; the nearest airport is the Lucknow International Airport, which is 130 km, and from there, you can rent a private taxi or cab or even book a local bus. Once you reach Ayodhya, board a taxi or local cab, and you can get to the temple quickly.

By rail- If you prefer travelling by train, then Faizabad and Ayodhya, both the junctions, are majors of the district and connect all nearby cities and towns. The Ayodhya junction is also just 3.4 km from the mandir. It would take up to 15 min to get there. So, you can walk or hire a taxi or cab to travel.

By road- If you are planning a road trip, the nearby destinations like Lucknow, Varanasi or Gorakhpur are all well connected with Ayodhya, making travel easy and convenient. The Ammaji Mandir is just 1.8 km from the Ayodhya bus station. You can get any local rickshaw or taxi from the top car rental companies in Ayodhya to reach the mandir. You can even walk the distance as it would take just 15 min to reach there.
