One such tale goes like this: When Lord Rama's younger son, Kush, was bathing in the Sarayu River, he accidentally dropped his amulet. Despite his repeated efforts, he could not find it, which left him feeling down, thinking it was a bad sign. Kush did not know that a Nag Kanya, who had a deep affection for him, had taken the amulet. She eventually returned it, earning Kush's admiration.

Because Nag Kanya was a devout follower of Lord Shiva, King Kush decided to build the Nageshwarnath Temple in Ayodhya in her honour as a token of his appreciation.

This temple remained in good condition even during the time of Vikramaditya. The current temple we see today was constructed in 1750 by Naval Rai, who served as a minister to Safdar Jung.

It's always filled with people coming to pray, especially on special days. Architecture of Sri Nageshwarnath Temple

The Nageshwarnath temple is designed to resemble a human body and follows both Western architectural style and the principles of Vaastu Shastra. This temple is organized into five main sections:

• The main entrance, known as Mahadwaar, symbolizes the "feet" of the temple, where people enter to worship.
• Between two sacred statues of Lord Hanuman and Lord Ganesh, you will find an entrance porch representing the "hands."
• The spacious prayer hall serves as the "abdomen and chest" of the temple, where devotees gather to offer their prayers.
• In Antarala, Lord Shiva's divine chariot, Nandi, is revered.
• The most significant area is the Garbha Griha, which corresponds to the "head" of the human body. This area is where the primary Shiva Linga is enshrined and worshipped.

The temple's biggest celebration is Maha Shivratri, where thousands of people visit. Every month, there is a special day called Pradosh Vrat (Krishna Paksha's 13th day), and many devotees come to the temple to pour water over the idol of Lord Nageshwar Nath.

A parade for Lord Shiva, called Shiv Barat, is a big attraction here. They also celebrate Kush's birthday.

An English scholar named Vincent Smith once said it is the only place of its kind in the world. It is one of the 108 important Shiva temples in India.

Entry fees and timings of Sri Nageshwarnath Temple

Entry to this religious place is free for all its visitors. The timings of the temple are 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

If you want to attend the Aarti, the Aarti timings are 5:00 AM to 6:00 AM and 8:00 PM to 8:30 PM. The Bhog timings are 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, which is worth having.

Best time to visit Sri Nageshwarnath Temple

The best time to visit the temple is during the festival of Shivratri, which usually falls in February or March. It's a significant celebration at the temple, and you can witness special prayers and rituals during this time.

However, visiting during the cooler months of October to March might be more comfortable, as the weather is more pleasant.

How to reach Sri Nageshwarnath Temple

The temple is near Ram Ki Paidi, Swargdwar, Theri Bazar, Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh 224123.

Getting to Ayodhya is easy, and the temple is pretty close. You have three options to get to the city:

By Road: You can take state buses or rent a private cab from cities like Lucknow, Gorakhpur, Prayagraj, or Varanasi, all around 200 km away. They will comfortably drop you in Ayodhya.

By Train: There are two train stations in Ayodhya, Ayodhya Junction and Ayodhya Cantt, connecting to many cities and towns across India. You can check for your preferred train option and reach Ayodhya.

By Air: The nearest airports are in Gorakhpur (139 km away) and Lucknow (151 km away). You can fly to either of these airports and then travel to Ayodhya by train or car. They are also working on building a new airport in Ayodhya, but it might take a while to complete.

Once you are in Ayodhya, reaching Sri Nageshwarnath Temple is relatively straightforward. You can take a taxi from the top car rental companies in Ayodhya or a local auto-rickshaw to reach the temple. Most locals will know its location, so it is easy for you to ask for directions.

Also, if you are staying in the central part of Ayodhya, the temple might be within walking distance, especially near the Saryu River.
