The City of Lord Rama: Ayodhya is one of India's ancient cities deeply rooted in history and the legendary epic Ramayana. The city is located on the beautiful ghat of River Sarayu. The city is home to various temples, ghats and monuments, making it more beautiful.
The spiritual energy which it carries makes you dive into Hinduism. Various temples and bhavans have been present for centuries, and no natural calamity has been able to harm them. After all, the city is the birthplace of Lord Rama. The city has played a pivotal role in Hindu mythology and history for years and years.
Amongst them, one famous destination which has gained importance in the past years is the Ram Katha Park, located on the banks of river Sarayu. This lush green expanse not only offers a place for leisurely strolls but also narrates the timeless epic of Lord Rama through its captivating sculptures, vibrant gardens, and soothing ambiance.
History of Ram Katha Park
Ram Katha Park has been renamed as the Queen Heo Hwang-ok Memorial Park in honour of a Korean queen with ancestral ties to India.
According to historical records, this Korean queen is believed to have been born as Princess Suriratna of Ayodhya, the daughter of King Padmasen, who ruled the ancient Kosala kingdom. The tale of Suriratna can be found in a 13th-century collection of legends known as the Samguk Yusa (Memorabilia of Three Kingdoms).
According to the legend, in 48 BC, when Suriratna was just 16 years old, she embarked on a journey from the ancient city of 'Ayuta' to Korea. Her father, guided by a dream, sent her to a foreign land in a boat accompanied by an entourage.
There, she married Kim Suro, the king of the southeastern Korean state, Geumgwan Gaya, and became the first queen of the newly established kingdom, which is believed to have been located in what is now modern-day Gimhae City in Southern Gyeongsang province. The memorial area was originally established in 2001 after India and South Korea agreed to develop Gimhae and Ayodhya as sister cities.
Five years later, a proposal to revamp the existing memorial was submitted by a South Korean delegation. Subsequently, Prime Minister Modi and South Korean President Moon Jae-in signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to beautify the memorial.
Following extensive restoration efforts, the park now features a pavilion housing Queen Heo Hwang-ok and King Kim Suro busts, as well as a pond representing the princess's journey from India to South Korea. Additionally, a granite egg sculpture symbolises the golden egg she carried with her during her remarkable journey.
