Located near the Sarayu river, the city’s history dates back thousands of years, and it is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ram. The city reflects the great significance of Hinduism. It finds special mention in the ancient Indian epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, and has been a significant centre for spiritual and cultural development.

Ever wondered what to do in Ayodhya? There are more than 100 religious places worth visiting in the city. Among the revered religious sites of Ayodhya, Shri Hanuman Garhi Mandir holds a special place. Dedicated to Lord Hanuman, this sacred temple has strong mythological significance.

History of Shri Hanuman Garhi Mandir

According to some beliefs, Lord Rama, Mata Sita, and Lord Hanuman returned to Ayodhya following the defeat of Ravana. Lord Hanuman chose to reside in a cave at Ayodhya to safeguard Ramkot, which is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Rama.

Interestingly, Hanuman Garhi, a prominent temple in Ayodhya, has connections to both Hindus and Muslims.

According to the Skanda Purana, King Vikramaditya was responsible for constructing Hanuman Garhi and 360 other temples. However, during the rule of Aurangzeb, the original Hanuman Garhi was destroyed, and a mosque was erected in its place.

Subsequently, the Bairag, after defeating Nawab Shujauddula, the King of Awadh, reclaimed the land. They removed the mosque and constructed a new temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman.

Some members of the Muslim community believed that Hanuman Garhi was built on the site of a mosque. This thought led to several attempts to demolish the temple, but they were unsuccessful.

Architecture of Shri Hanuman Garhi Mandir

The Hanuman Garhi temple in Ayodhya is a prime illustration of North Indian temple design. The temple compound is structured with a sequence of steps leading up to the central temple, enclosed by a protective wall.

The central temple is quadrangular and stands approximately 70 feet tall. It boasts four entrance gates and is adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures representing various deities. The temple's construction has yellow sandstone, showcasing detailed artwork and ornate designs.

At the heart of the temple lies the principal deity, Lord Hanuman, positioned within the sanctum (known as the Garbha Griha).

The idol of Lord Hanuman is portrayed in a seated position with his right hand raised in a gesture of blessing. Additionally, the temple complex houses smaller shrines and temples dedicated to other deities.

The temple's architectural style also includes numerous chhatris- dome-shaped pavilions erected atop the temple's roof. These chhatris are a distinguishing feature of North Indian temple architecture, enhancing the temple's visual appeal.

A strong wall surrounds the temple, making it look special and secure. These walls have pretty sculptures and carvings showing gods and stories from Hindu tales. These walls do not just look nice; they also protect the temple and the people who come to pray there.

The Hanuman Garhi temple is a great example of how North Indian temples are made, and is an important part of Ayodhya's culture and history.

The annual Hanuman Jayanti celebrations at Shree Hanuman Garhi Mandir are grand. The temple is beautifully decorated, and special prayers and bhajans are organized at this time. The entire town of Ayodhya comes alive with the spirit of devotion.
