History of Gulab Bari, Ayodhya
Gulab Bari, also known as the Rose Garden, is more than just a place with many beautiful roses. It is also where the third ruler of Awadh, Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula, who reigned from 1753 to 1775, is buried. This peaceful place has several rose varieties and pretty water fountains.
The government decided to protect it as a national treasure and preserve this place in 1958, as the place is important for Indian history.
Architecture of Gulab Bari, Ayodhya
The Gulab Bari is a two-storey square structure with arched verandahs. The upper floor has a front with three arches adorned with minarets on the corners. An inverted lotus and metal tip top the dome over the central room.
As you enter Gulab Bari, the symphony of fragrances overwhelms your senses, courtesy of the countless roses that paint the landscape in red, pink, and white hues.
The Gulab Bari is enclosed by a wall built using Lakhauri bricks. Inside, you will discover the tomb of Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula, the mosque, Imambara, Shahi Hammam, Baradari, and a well that you can access through triple-arched gateways.
Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula built his tomb while he was alive, and to enter, you pass through a grand gateway. The main room holds the grave where Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula and his mother rest. The tomb is at the centre of a Charbagh Garden, surrounded by fountains and shallow water channels.
Overall, the intricate latticework, arched doorways, and the timeless charm of the beautiful architectural design create an atmosphere suspended in history.

The best time to visit Ayodhya and Gulab Bari is during winter in October to February as the weather is favourable. Gulab Bari should be visited during the early morning to get proper views of the architectural marvels.
How to reach Gulab Bari, Ayodhya
Faizabad, a neighbouring town to Ayodhya, is a small place situated around 130 km away from the state capital, Lucknow. It is an ideal destination for a day trip from Lucknow and can be easily accessed by bus or train directly from the capital. Gulab Bari is also located in Faizabad. It is located at State Highway 9, Vaidehi Nagar, Faizabad, Uttar Pradesh 224001.
The Ayodhya bus station is about 8.3 km from Gulab Bari. From outside the station, you can get an auto or taxi to reach there. It might take around 30 min to travel.
If travelling by rail, please note that the Ayodhya junction is 5.7 km, and it is a 20 min journey to Gulab Bari. You can easily get local vehicles of your choice to travel.
Now, for all the air travellers, please note that Ayodhya does not have an airport; hence, book your tickets until Lucknow, Varanasi, or Gorakhpur. All these places are nearby, and you can get a bus or rented private vehicle to reach Ayodhya. You can also plan for a road trip if convenient.
